SAN DIEGO (April 7, 2016) ““ Lankford Phelps Portman announced today the opening of two Marriott hotels, a 253-room SpringHill Suites and 147-room Residence Inn, in a dual-branded development located in a key part of the Port of San Diego’s North Embarcadero waterfront revitalization project. The hotels sit atop more than 400 parking spaces and 27,000 square feet of waterfront restaurants, shops and other boutique retail spaces.

The developers conceived of the redevelopment of the former Lane Field site as a campus of hotel brands at different price points and room types along with supporting restaurants and other amenities to create a new waterfront destination.

John Portman & Associates (JP&A) brought the vision to life by creating an integrated guest experience for both hotel brands within a shared footprint. The hotels are located at the intersection of Broadway and Pacific Highway, BRIC a premium location on the Downtown San Diego waterfront, with easy access to the U.S.S. Midway Museum, Little Italy, historic Gaslamp District, Seaport Village, San Diego Zoo the Convention Center, and the San Diego International Airport. The hotel’s cutting-edge design, spectacular bay and city skyline views, terrace level outdoor swimming pool and bayfront patio area, combined breakfast room and state-of-the-art fitness center offer shared and unique amenities to each hotel’s guests.

“Phase one of BRIC is the outcome of a truly collaborative process between our development partnership, the Coastal Commission, the Port of San Diego, the City of San Diego and its citizens through numerous public meetings,” said Ambrish Baisiwala, CEO of Portman Holdings. “This select service hotel is unlike anything that has been constructed on San Diego’s waterfront in recent history, and we’re excited to now share it with San Diego residents and visitors alike.”

“Urbanistically, BRIC phase one continues the process of reconnecting the waterfront to the city through the new Bayfront Court, (C Street) view corridor connection and the creation of Lane Field Park,” said Gordon Beckman, Design Director for JP&A. “Inspired architecturally by the graphic nature of the signal flags on the USS Midway, the design links to the maritime tradition of San Diego. This project is about location ““ optimizing the unique qualities of the city and the site, and celebrating the San Diego waterfront.”

Lankford Phelps Portman, a partnership among Lankford & Associates, Phelps Development and Portman Holdings, have been pursuing this development for several years. They are now in predevelopment on the second phase of BRIC, immediately adjacent. John Portman & Associates is also responsible for the design of this second phase.

About the Port of San Diego

The Port of San Diego is a unified district encompassing five member cities surrounding San Diego Bay. A public agency, the Port is charged by the State of California with developing the tidelands and commercial business as steward of the public-trust tidelands along 34 miles of San Diego Bay. We share the waterfront with the Navy, which oversees 17 miles of San Diego Bay.

We operate under the Public Trust Doctrine, which specifies that these waterways and waterfronts are primarily reserved for water-dependent uses such as fishing, cargo activity, bay tours and recreational access such as hotels and restaurants; as well as environmental and natural-habitat preservation.

We have guided the development of this prime waterfront property with a carefully selected portfolio of world-class commercial real estate, maritime and public uses. Our 17 hotels, 25 marinas, numerous restaurants, tours and museum attractions operate side-by-side with a working waterfront of boatyards, sportfishing landings and marine cargo terminals. We also operate 22 public parks as amenities that attract visitors and enhance the value of our waterfront.
